Stir Cove - Council Bluffs, Iowa - 8.28.10

Did you know that three feature length films have been shot in the city of Council Bluffs, Iowa?  Bet you can't name a single one.  That's okay, we'll help you out.  Union Pacific (1939) with Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Preston, directed by Cecil B. DeMille; The Indian Runner (1991) with Dennis Hopper and Charles Bronson, directed by Sean Penn; and Citizen Ruth (1996) with Burt Reynolds and Laura Dern aka Mrs. Ben Harper, directed by Alexander Payne.  Union Pacific received an Oscar nomination for effects and DeMille won the Golden Palm at Cannes for his direction.  I doubt any of you knew that.  Feel free to bring up those nuggets of info next time you're sitting at the bar and see if the person next to you doesn't think you sound like a worldly and intelligent individual.  Needless to say, Council Bluffs has seen excitement roll through town before, so when the bus came pulling up for this Saturday night rock show the CB was ready to go.

You may have noticed the setlist had a certain theme to it this evening.  Yes it was a one set, all electric show.  No, there was no Bewildered or Fear Years in there but there were six out of the ten songs from Southern Harmony.  We're not sure but we think that means 60% of the album was played.

After Sting Me and Jealous Again got everyone moving, Cypress Tree was dusted off early in the set and taken around the block for the first time since Clearwater, Florida on October 7, 2009.  That's where the original Hooters was.  Another song that was brought out of storage tonight and not a minute too soon was Delaney and Bonnie's Coming Home, which is always well placed no matter where it winds up.  That's another one that's a little tough to track on Crowesbase, so we can't say with complete certainty that the last Coming Home went down in Bossier City on October 17, 2009 but we're pretty sure it did.

If you were in the mood to jam, the next four songs were tailor made for you.  Morning Song, Ballad In Urgency > Wiser Time and Black Moon Creeping were all workouts in their own right and served as the Black Crowes Boot Camp portion of the show.  We aren't exactly sure how long these four lasted as a combo platter but if you were clean shaven during Morning Song you probably had a little stubble working by the time Black Moon was wrapping up.

See this picture on the left?  This was taken during soundcheck.  If you squint you can see people on stage.
See this picture on the right?  That was taken backstage.  If you squint you can see fresh fruit.
Back to the show...I Ain't Hiding came after Black Moon Creeping and if you haven't seen this short clip from opening night in Riverside you should watch it right now.  See if you can spot the licks by Rich reminiscent of the breakdown in Tied Up and Swallowed

After that was There's Gold In Them Hills followed by a threesome of Southern Harmony tunes with No Speak No Slave ending the set, which has also been known to open a show or two as well.  An all Shake Your Moneymaker encore was appropriate for a band celebrating its history and the road that led to where it is today.  Anybody who wanted to hear some jams got a good dose of them and anybody who came wanting to hear the big ones got a good handful of those tonight too.  Let's see if anybody has any random thoughts they'd like to share...

Chris did not wanna be there... and then the slap in the face at the end of the show. Thanks for dialing that shit in and cashing the casino check.

Interesting.  What else...

He's probably referring to what Chris said after the second encore before the band jumped on the bus. He said something like "Thanks and we'll go see the real weirdos in Denver"  It was nice to hear Cypress Tree again live and NSNS is always a blast (my personal favorite as a show opener). First time hearing the extended Wiser Time jam and frankly liked the show. Believe me, I've been to shows where I thought the boys just wanted to get on down the road, but I'm not convinced this was one of them.

There's always two sides to every story.  Here's one more...

Last night was nothing but straight good old fashion rock n roll.  I don't know what the original poster is talking about because it looked to me that Chris was having a good time.

Yes friends, you never know how somebody will interpret a show.  One person walks away happy and another walks away upset.  The power this band has to make or ruin someone's evening is palpable.  Now don't worry about what kind of drinks Harrah's was serving at Stir Cove because this here is a signed drum head from the band and we thought you'd find that more interesting than a $6 bottle of Corona.

Next stop - weirdos in Denver.
